For a town he visited only once–though in a very jaunty sailor’s cap– Winston Churchill looms a surprisingly large presence in Palm Beach.
While Marrakesh may have been Churchill’s preferred subject for his own paintings, his sculptor granddaughter, Edwina Sandys, was a longtime Palm Beach resident whose 14′ high Eve’s Apple was displayed in the Society of the Four Arts’ sculpture garden before moving to the Palm Beach Zoo. Fittingly, while at the Four Arts, Eve’s Apple’s neighboring piece was Allies, a park bench with bronze sculptures of FDR seated to one side and Churchill to the other. The seating gap in the middle of the two Yalta pals (apparently Joe Stalin couldn’t make it) is now an Instagram honeytrap for garden visitors.
Most recently, the Four Arts got one more piece of the great man. A Cambridge in America lecture on Churchill was paired with a reception to welcome a wonderful new gift to the permanent collection. An iconic painting of Churchill from 1943 with Winston in full bulldog mode was presented by Jill Gilmour on behalf of her late husband David.
How did an important painting by famed Churchill portraitist Frank Salisbury wind up hanging in David Gilmour’s Palm Beach library? According to Jill, the painting titled Blood, Sweat and Tears was displayed for years at 10 Downing Street until the winds of political change blew it off the wall when a Labor government swept in. Ever the charmer, David Gilmour offered to make the offending Conservative minister’s visage disappear. And that’s how it found its way to the lobby of the Four Arts!

Palm Beach Area – Pending Sales by Type
|
|
|
Market Activity Continues Strong, Especially Houses. The pick-up in activity that began last Fall has continued through the winter months, with new Pending Sales up across all Palm Beach market housing types. If we had to highlight one though, it would be single-family homes (the rising blue line above) where inventory has rapidly been disappearing. Well-priced homes in move-in condition do not last long in this market.
On the other hand, there is very good inventory available in beachfront condos in Palm Beach’s South End. For buyers with budgets from $1m-$4m there is a lot to choose from (below). And we are talking nice, well-maintained buildings on the beach with pools, gardens and often tennis too!

Maybe the most perfect unit in all the Trianon. The 02 line vistas bend east/southeast – looking across to Palm Beach, the Town Docks, the Atlantic Ocean and long views down the Intracoastal. They are spectacular! And that’s before discussing the apartment itself which got an absolutely perfect renovation in 2022. As beautiful a kitchen as you’ll find anywhere, all new baths and closets, and a brilliant transformation of the entryway to a dry bar with wine fridge. New full size washer and vented dryer, new AC. The Trianon has been undergoing a transformation of its common areas and hallways overseen by designer Gil Walsh and that work is nearing completion – it will be all new and beautiful. There is no better value than this penthouse sitting on the doorstep to Palm Beach.

Beautiful open views to the ocean await in this perfectly placed unit at the Halcyon. A subtle jog to the south in the building’s layout means 201N’s expansive living room looks East/Southeast over the dunes to the beach and the sunrise. Originally a 3 bedroom/3 bath unit, one bedroom has been opened up to create a library-den space adjoining the living room, with the 3rd bath providing an attractive powder room for guests. Primary and guest bedroom both have south facing sliders with access to the terrace which wraps around the south side of the unit, offering picture perfect views of the beach and pool. Situated on one of the widest stretches of sand in Palm Beach, Halcyon also features two HarTru tennis courts and, with no pending projects, it’s ready for you to enjoy.

A beautifully renovated, masterful landmark of Modernist architecture, the Boat House combines the very best elements of life in Palm Beach – the perfect spot on the lakefront with dock and boat-lift, deeded ocean access at the Mockingbird neighborhood beach cabana, and an incredibly elegant, exquisitely renovated, move-in ready home. This nautically themed Art Moderne home faces prow-forward toward dramatic sunsets, its rooftop deck overlooking the pool, dock and sparkling Intracoastal. Sea-going touches include seamed hardwood floors, porthole windows and white-piped terrace railings. The house received a full renovation a few years ago and the current owners then made meaningful improvements of their own. Those improvements include all new AC units including one for the garage, a high-end water filtration system, an oversized wine and beverage fridge, a smart home tech center and electric awning for the dining terrace. And to top it all off- an outdoor infrared sauna! Mockingbird is one of the very few Palm Beach streets with both a private neighborhood beach cabanas and direct lake trail access. (video available)
