December: Letter from Palm Beach: A Covid Christmas

Which Tree Caught The Covid?

The Worth Avenue tree looked a little lonelier this year (right) than last. But the Covid Grinch couldn’t stop Christmas from coming. It came without Santa in a Ferrari, or shoppers cadging free treats from shopkeepers, or choirs belting carols from church lofts. But at least some of the kids and grandkids got to town (after testing negative), the weather was gorgeous, the waves had a swell and restaurant terraces were dotted with socially-distanced diners (after temps were taken). Families set tables outside in the clean fresh air and called in the florists for beautiful, intimate dinners. Covid hadn’t stopped Christmas from coming, it came! Somehow or other, it came just the same!

New Listings Turn Up!

You can’t tell from Zillow, but the latest trend in the Palm Beach market is sellers accelerating plans to sell. With so little single-family home inventory available in December, holiday conversations with the family included updated calculations on inheritances, upkeep and property taxes that concluded with “why are we waiting?” You can see the upturn in New Listings at the far right hand side of the graph above. And that’s just for homes that have been formally “listed” in the MLS. There’s a whole ‘nother group of homes on the whisper list– properties agents know will be coming to market soon but aren’t there yet. Demand creates its own supply.

Apparently, even Bloomberg is reading A Letter from Palm Beach. New Yorkers Turn Palm Beach Into Hamptons South Fleeing Virus is a fun read. Thanks Amanda!, but maybe next time, with attribution, rather than “a Sothebys Realtor”?!
